More Than a Fabric Store: The Realization of a Lifelong Passion

Dawn McDonald, owner of The Grain Bin’s Quilt Shop, has been quilting for most of her life. She picked up the hobby when she was just 10 years old from her great-grandmother, Ethel. Dawn has fond memories of sitting around the table with Ethel and her friends, quilting by hand. When one of Dawn's quilts won a ribbon at the county fair, she was hooked.

Dawn is a familiar face to our long-time shoppers. She opened our retail store in 2008, known then as The Grain Bin Market & Bakery. For the first three years of the store’s operation, she focused on selling baked goods and bulk foods. Life as a new small business owner got busy. But in the back of her mind, she had a long-held dream to open her own fabric store.

Finally, in 2011, with the encouragement of her friend Jackie, Dawn fulfilled that dream and opened the Quilt Shop. When Dawn sold The Grain Bin to Aron Dunn and Jason McDonald in 2022, she kept ownership of the Quilt Shop portion of the store.

All Your Quilting Supplies, Under One Roof

Step inside our Quilt Shop and you will find three rooms of fabrics, notions, books, quilting kits, and patterns. One of the fabric lines Dawn carries is Moda Fabrics, a company that prides itself on quality and exceptional customer service.

The Quilt Shop maintains the same hours and phone number as the rest of the store. Staff is always available to cut fabric and ring up your purchase. If you have in-depth quilting or sewing questions, you can call the store to see if Dawn or Ann are in before stopping by.

We’re a Popular “Shop Hop” Stop

The Grain Bin Quilt Shop participates in local and statewide “shop hops” throughout the year.  The annual Wisconsin Quilt Shop Hop, which is held in June of each year, brings in quilters from across the state.

You can see what local shop hops we’re participating in by following The Grain Bin Fabric Lovers Group on Facebook.
